ACE

When she pulled into my driveway last night, I stormed into the house and didn’t invite her in. What’s the point? I’ve never forced a woman into my bed and I’m not about to start now. I half expected her to leave, but Shutterbug is still parked in the driveway this morning. I don’t know what to make of it. Was she too tired to find an overnight spot or did she do it on purpose? Hoping we’ll talk today. No idea but I do have someplace I need to be at three o’clock. And I can’t remember if she has plans, too.

I slept like shit and have no appetite whatsoever, so I just pop in a pod. Caffeine will have to suffice for now. I’ll grab something quick later or nuke one of my meals. That’s what they’re there for. Once the coffee is done brewing, I grab the cup and sit at the island, scrolling through my phone for any messages. Not a one. Good. Moving on to emails, I respond to a few that are marked as urgent while sipping on my dark roast. Hits the spot.

As I’m taking the last sip, there’s a knock on my front door. Since I’m not expecting anyone, care to take a wild guess who it is? Follow me.

Harmony’s standing on the front porch, staring off in the distance. I had an inkling it might be her. The door has been unlocked all night, but I knew if she stayed, she wouldn’t have come in. She’s as stubborn as they come.

Opening the door, I’m greeted with, “Morning, Ace. Mind if I come in?” Do I? Well, it depends on what she has to say.

“Come on in. Want some coffee?” See, I can be hospitable even when she cracks my chest wide open.

“No thanks, I had a few cups already.” I’m assuming it’s because she’s like me and didn’t sleep well last night.

“What’s on your mind, baby? Hit me between the eyes and let’s get it over with.” Am I being an asshole? Absolutely, but there’s no sense in beating around the bush. Rip off the damn Band-Aid already.

I purposely sat on the couch so she could sit next to me. She chose the recliner. This isn’t going to turn out the way I’d hoped.

“Out of all the rockstars I’ve ever known, you intrigue me the most. Always hiding behind those blue specs. Are they prescription glasses or do you wear them as your persona? It does add a little mystery behind the man for some. For a perceptive photographer like me, I say it’s a disguise.” Fuck this!

“Okay, enough. I already have one fucking doctor trying to analyze me, I don’t need another. You can see yourself out the door.” As soon as I stand up to leave, she rushes over to sit next to me.

“Please hear me out. It’s important to get this off my chest.” With her hand on my arm, I sit back down. My heart’s beating staccato inside my chest with a need to flee but I’ll hear her out.
